Byzantine Political Ideology¶
Type: Political theology concept
Byzantine Empire, 4th–15th century
Core Principles¶
Byzantine political ideology rested on the concept of the emperor (basileus) as God's representative on earth, charged with defending and governing the Christian commonwealth (oikumene).
Key Elements¶
-
Divine appointment — The emperor receives authority from God, not from the people. "Că nu te-au ales, nici te-au uns oamenii spre domnie, ci Dumnezeu te-au ales și te-au unsu" (Neagoe Basarab)
-
The Three Pillars of Monarchy (after Zonaras's warning to Alexios Komnenos):
- Dreptatea — Justice: judge fairly, protect the weak
- Milostenia — Philanthropy: generosity toward the poor, church, and subjects
- Evsevia — Piety: preserve correct Orthodox faith -
Symphonia — Harmony between secular and ecclesiastical authority, emperor and patriarch
-
The Emperor as Defender of Orthodoxy — The emperor must protect the Church, convene councils, uphold correct doctrine
-
The Constantinian Model — After Constantine the Great: the emperor as warrior-legislator, bringer of Christian civilization
The Roman-Byzantine Synthesis¶
Byzantine political thought fused:
- Roman imperial ideology (emperor as imperator)
- Hellenistic kingship traditions
- Christian theology (God's vice-regent on earth)
Transmission to Balkan States¶
The Byzantine model was transmitted to:
- Serbia, Bulgaria, and especially
- The Romanian Principalities (Moldavia and Wallachia)
In Wallachia, neagoe-basarab articulated this tradition in his Instructions to Theodosie (c. 1512–1521), drawing on:
- Old Testament kingship (Samuel/Kings)
- Patriarch Eftimie of Tarnovo's Panegyric of Saints Constantine and Helena
Key Sources¶
- Eusebius of Caesarea, Vita Constantini (Life of Constantine)
- Agapitos, Panegyric to Emperor Justinian
- Zonaras, Epitome (warning to Alexios Komnenos)
- Neagoe Basarab, Învățăturile către Theodosie
